Menace Named Ragging: Victim, ‘Perpetrator’ Both Suffer
Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has decided to ban cellphones on state college and university campuses. The move came after allegations that a first-year girl student of Bilaspur engineering college was photographed in the nude by her seniors during ragging in the hostel. The seniors also reportedly threatened to circulate the photographs via MMS when she refused to do certain sexual acts.
The computer engineering student, who joined the college on August 2, is now undergoing treatment in the mental diseases department at the Bhim Rao Ambedkar Medical College in Raipur.
State higher education minister Ajay Chandrakar said, “We have made up our mind to ban the use of cellphones on college campuses and a notice in this regard by the education department will be issued soon.’’
The police are yet to register a case. Chandrakar, however, said, “We have set up a high-level panel to probe the matter and action will be taken against the guilty.’’
The girl’s father, a tailor from Dongargarh town, rushed to Bilaspur on August 25 when the hostel warden called him to say that “your daughter is not eating anything and she is also not attending classes. Please, come here and get her treated’’.
“When I reached the hostel, the warden gave me a letter saying my daughter needs psychiatric help,’’ he said.
“My daughter has gone through a lot of pain without any fault of her. She is the eldest of my five children and she is brilliant. She secured 144 out of 200 in the pre-engineering test and got admission in the prestigious engineering college. The college authorities now want to prove that she is not mentally fit,’’ the father alleged.
Handed over to police, Indore student ends life
Bhopal: Students of Holkar Science College took to the streets in Indore on Saturday demanding resignation of the principal after the police on Friday recovered the body of Ashoke Chaudhury, one of the three students accused of ragging freshers, on the railway tracks. Chaudhury committed suicide by jumping in front of a train, the police said.
On Wednesday, three final year students of the college were handed over to the police after principal Narendra Dharkar “found them ragging freshers’’. The three students were kept in police lock-up for eight hours and then released by the police on the request of the principal.
“I did not want to spoil their future. I spoke to the police and requested them not to register a case against them,’’ Dharkar said.
After their release, two students went back to the hostel, while Chaudhury did not. He was missing since then, only to be found dead on the tracks. The police said the postmortem report confirmed that Chaudhury committed suicide. TNN
