CAT CHALLENGE

Meet the challenges CAT presents wuth a well defined strategy, says N. Krishnamoorthy

The common Admission Test (CAT) has undergone many changes in the last few years. the number of sections in the test paper has changed from four to two and now to three verbal ability quantitative mathematics and data interpretation which include logical and analytical reasoning questions. each section has subdivisions a and b. further, there is no section wise time limit the candidate has to demonstrate his competence in all three sections in the stipulated time frame.
it is, therefore suggested that students allocate about 40 minutes for the verbal section, about 55 minutes for the quantitative section and the remaining 55 minutes for the quantitative section and the remaining 55 minutes for DI. of couse, the allocation of time will vary from individual to individual but by and large one should try to work with in the above time limits as part of time management. students should not spend too much time on any one section at the cost of the others.
the CAT 2006 bulletin makes a special mention of the admission selection process that will be followed by the indian institutes of management (IIMs). IIM-Ahmedabad, as mentioned earlier, has made it clear that the cut-off marks for shortlisting candidates for the group discussion and personal interview would be not less than 25 per cent in each of the three sections and not less than 33 per cent in aggregate across the three sections. it also states that the actual cut off used for shortlisting however, may be higher than the above specified percentage score and would depend upon the performance of candidates in CAT. Since the test now provides some gudelines about the cut-off marks, this will help you in planning your strategy more effectively.
as the name impleis, CAT is jointly conducted by the six IIMs. However , each IIM follows its own admission process performance in CAT is only one of several criteria used by the IIMs to judge suitability of a candidate- first for the interview and then for their management programmes. CAT is fascinating for its competitiveness and exciting because of the challenges it presents.
