relentlessly since its inception !" years ago in #$%&' Since then( it

economically viable as possible
Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service began functioning in #$%&
and till now it has grown into one of the best modes of public

lahs per day covering around #+& routes throughout the city'
Ahmedabad is a growing city with boundaries e,panding every now
and then( but AMTS has not limited itself' It has always come
forward to serve the newly adopted areas into the perimeter of the
Ahmedabad Municipal -orporation and e,pand itself'
Till .//"( all the buses at AMTS were on the primary fuel i'e'
0iesel' 1ut after the order of the Supreme -ourt on the
recommendation of the 1hure 2al -ommittee( AMTS was forced to
adopt -34 buses in majority rather than using the diesel buses'
Till present( the AMTS 5eet has $+. buses which consist of both(
self owned and hired buses which are on contract from the private
players' The distribution of buses is e,plained as per the chart
given6
Initially( all buses of AMTS functioned on diesel only' 1ut after the
amendment of 1hure 2al -ommittee appointed by the Supreme
-ourt of India( all the buses had to be converted to -34 as a
response to high levels of pollution caused by public transport
vehicles in the city'
The buses were converted to -34 as per the availability of
resources and all the buses diesel vehicles were scrapped out
accordingly'
As per the guidelines of the 1hure 2al -ommittee( -34 buses were
to be implemented on an immediate basis' 0ue to lac of resources(
and to meet the deadline for the conversion of buses( AMTS opted
for the contract system according to which the buses were hired'
As per the contract system( the contractor is paid a certain sum( a
7,ed hiring charge and remaining on the basis of ilometres
covered by the bus'
AMTS ac8uired many of the buses by passing e,pression of
interest9 tenders' The contract system was initiated in April .//+'
At present( AMTS is having around ./ contracts with an average
ratio of #/ buses per contract'
:ence shifting to the contract system was more of a forced step
rather than an initiative by AMTS to run the buses on alternate
fuel' i'e' -34 and to bring down the pollution level in the city as
well as gaining higher performance of the vehicle'
The initials and numbers of the contractor is noticeable behind the
bus around the license plate' Most of the transport companies are
major contractors to AMTS' ;nder the contract system( the revenue
generated from the contract buses goes to AMTS'
The AMTS pays the salary of the bus conductor' or this
ac8uisition( AMTS paid
