Career in Aquaculture



If you want to engage yourself with aquatic world and understand each species, by knowing the difference fresh water fish, brackish water fish and sea water fish, then opting for aquaculture or aquaculturist field is the best thing to do. For many, aquaculture field is new and might not even heard about it, but it is emerging field which would give a better opportunity for a person who is too interested in aquatic world.

In broader sense, aquaculture is farming of aquatic species in ponds, cages, raceways until they till to the marketable size. Also cultivation of aquatic organisms is a called as aquaculture. It is a new concept, but is being practiced since ancient times and now with aquatic world in serious threat the sector is booming to study them. There are different branches in this field such as aquaculture extension, aquaculture medicine, aquaculture nutrition etc. Each of these mentioned branches has its own benefits and one can even specialize in it.

Both public and private sectors are giving better opportunities for new aquaculturist with better pay and also to become a scientist. In India, there is a better scope for this field as country is covered with multiple bodies and fishing industry is therefore increasing which ultimately giving opportunity in this field.

In aquaculture one has to develop fish farms and perform research in it. Also fish farmers have to join hands to find out and prevent water pollution and engage in fish preservation. Methods of fish cultivation, harvesting, freezing in both coastal and inland factories are being practiced.

Though the field seems to be promising there are certain cons of this filed. Firstly, there are very few institutes that offer specific aquaculture course. Secondly, out of 18 fishery colleges in India, there are only 10 that offers this course.

Career Growth in Aquaculture[/b]:

There is good career growth in aquaculture field with lot more public and private companies are encouraging bright new faces to enter in this field. The CFTRI’s Biology department, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and MPEDA are looking out new aquaculturist

However, to get success in this career one has learn swimming, handle fishes and dissect them. He/she should be prepared to work day long on water and fish farm.

Remuneration Offered in Aquaculture[/b]:

The remuneration offered in aquaculture depends on the profession you are into. For lecturers, the salary is Rs 25,000-30,000/-. Farming supervisors get salary between Rs 15,000-25,000/-.
