Career Choices In Construction Management

Recently, there have been a number of management institutes that have been offering masters in real estate management and construction management. There is a slight difference between these two. Real estate management deals with the real estate sector which is basically handling real estate project - this involves an understanding of the real estate industry, identifying profitable land locations, franchising the construction, managing relationships with the land owners, etc. Construction management on the other hand deals primarily with the construction part. This is a logical extension for those who have graduated in civil engineering since it helps these engineers get a business perspective of construction.

While the demand for real estate management is on the rise and the students in general have an understanding of what's on offer, construction management is not equally popular. However, it needs to be emphasized that construction management can be equally lucrative. Here are some of the career choices a management graduate in construction can look out for

Project Managers:

Construction of real estate is a major project that needs a project manager who can hold the various teams together. A degree in construction management will give you the right skills that will help you in this coordination effort. It's a highly lucrative industry.

Sales And Marketing Managers:

There are a lot of companies that deal with the construction companies for product supplies. Traditionally this interfacing role was held by generalist managers with a marketing degree. However, now construction management holders are a sought lot. As a sales manager, you can find a job in either an equipment selling firm or businesses that offer rental services for cranes and other supplies.

Account Managers:

Construction firms typically work for real estate companies that need services in various projects across their market. As an account manager, you can interface with the real estate clients to understand their requirements, project budget and then chalk out the plans for construction with your team. In this role, you may also need to be in charge of recruiting subcontractors who may be responsible for helping your company service the client on time.

There are several groups on LinkedIn and other other business networking websites where you can network with people with construction management degrees. This will help you get a deeper understanding of the skills required and what you stand to gain. If you cannot afford a full time MBA at the moment, you may also check out the several online courses that are available for construction management students.
