About Us
The mission of the Faculty of Graduate Studies is to foster excellence, creativity, and innovation in graduate education and research at the University of Calgary.
The Faculty provides leadership and support for excellence in graduate education and research to about 5,400 graduate students in 52 programs. An important responsibility is to ensure that graduate degrees granted by the University of Calgary meet high national and international standards. The Faculty works to ensure that the best students are recruited and admitted to the University of Calgary by, for example, setting admission and program standards and through the administration of about $20 million annually in financial awards for graduate study. It also promotes uniform standards of excellence across programs through establishing degree requirements, granting supervisory privileges and approving examiners.

he University of Calgary is a research and teaching university of growing national and international stature. According to the Canadian Association of University Business Officers, the U of C is the most research-intensive university in Alberta and among the top 10 in Canada. Research funding exceeds $134.5 million per year.
The U of C is recognised nationally and internationally as a leading research university. It is a member of nine national Centres of Excellence; the Canadian International Development Agency named the U of C a Centre of Excellence in International Development; Alberta Advanced Education established the Centre for Gifted Education at U of C; and the World Tourism Organization approved the U of C's International Tourism Education and Research Centre -- only the second outside Europe.
The U of C houses many research institutes, centres and groups investigating a wide variety of topics such as the Arctic, law and the family, energy, the environment, petroleum engineering, the humanities, software research and development and transportation. About 75 chairs and professorships in such areas as American studies, schizophrenia, project management, cancer and intelligent manufacturing attract renowned scholars and leading researchers to the U of C. More than 30 endowed chairs are supported jointly by government and industry.
The direct cash flow arising from local expenditures of the university, its faculty, staff, students and visitors is estimated to be $342 million. The total gross domestic product expected to be induced by the initial local business volumes in additional rounds of spending is approximately $582 million. U of C is Calgary's fourth largest employer.
The MacKimmie Library -- one of Canada's largest -- has particularly strong collections of papers by Canadian authors including Brian Moore, W.O. Mitchell, Mordecai Richler and Aritha van Herk, and an extensive architectural collection that includes work by Douglas Cardinal and Arthur Erikson.
The University of Calgary gained full autonomy as a degree-granting institution in 1966. Today the university has 16 faculties with more than 60 academic departments and major program areas situated on a beautifully landscaped 213-hectare campus in northwest Calgary. The U of C employs about 1,900 academic and 2,400 support staff and serves 30,000 students registered in degree programs and another 20,000 in continuing education programs.
