About the U of A
Founded a century ago, the University of Alberta is one of the top 100 teaching and research universities in the world serving more than 36,000 students with 11,000 faculty and staff. The U of A has an annual budget in excess of $1 billion and attracts more than $480 million in external research funding. It offers close to 400 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in 18 faculties.
Created – in the words of its first president, Henry Marshall Tory – "for the uplifting of the whole people," the university is committed to inspiring the human spirit through outstanding achievements in learning, discovery and citizenship and building one of the world's great universities for the public good.
Facilities
• The $52.2-million National Institute for Nanotechnology, a joint project between the National Research Council, the Government of Alberta and the University of Alberta, is the heart of nanotechnology research in Canada. The 20,000-square meter building is one of the world’s most technologically advanced research facilities.
• The original North Campus covers about 50 city blocks with more than 90 buildings; additional land off campus for research.
• Agri-Food Discovery Place supports research in meat safety, crop use for food, including research into nutritionally enhanced food, and crop use for industrial products, such as bio-degradable fuel sources and bio-plastics.
• University of Alberta Libraries: Canada’s second-largest research library; ranks first in volumes per student with 5.7 million volumes; has access to more than 410,000 full-text electronic journals and more than 600 electronic data bases.
• Timms Centre for the Arts, is regarded as the finest theatre teaching facility in the country.
• Van Vliet Physical Education and Recreation Centre and Foote Field are superb facilities for most outdoor and indoor sports.
• Creating a vibrant hub in downtown Edmonton fostering research, learning and partnership, Enterprise Square is home to TEC Edmonton, the Faculty of Extension, School of Business executive education and family business programs, a U of A Bookstore and various administrative units, including Alumni Affairs and University of Alberta International.
