WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY
Waterloo | Brantford | Kitchener | Toronto
DEPARTMENT / PROGRAM
Business / Laurier Entrepreneurship Core
TYPE OF CHANGE
Addition of a new minor or option to a program
MOTION
On the recommendation of the Senate Academic Planning Committee, that Senate
approve the creation of the Laurier Entrepreneurship Core, which will be open to
all Honours students currently at Laurier.
APPROVED AT:
Business Curriculum Committee March 3, 2015
Business Council March 6, 2015
SBE Curriculum Committee March 16, 2015
SBE Faculty Council April 10, 2015
Senate Academic Planning
Committee
May 12, 2015
EFFECTIVE DATE:
September 1, 2015
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED CHANGE:
The Business Department would like to provide an Entrepreneurship Core set of courses,
accessible to all students across campus. The Entrepreneurship Core will have 3 required
courses (1.5 credits) that provide students with an entrepreneurial foundation—from
ideation, to business model creation, to execution—ultimately preparing graduates to apply
to Laurier LaunchPad.
RATIONALE FOR PROPOSED CHANGE:
The Entrepreneurship Core will take students through the entrepreneurial process, providing
knowledge, skills, structures, guidance, mentorship and resources for starting new ventures.
ALIGNMENT WITH UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC PLAN:
This initiative addresses the University Academic Plan directly. The Laurier
Entrepreneurship Core appeals to discovery and innovation, enabling students to bring

creative ideas to fruition and providing the academic foundations for starting an
entrepreneurial venture or managing an entrepreneurial organization upon graduation.
Laurier’s commitment to diversity is reflected in making the Laurier Entrepreneurship Core
accessible to the entire University community: ventures and classroom interaction will
benefit tremendously from the diversity of student groups, their backgrounds and
perspectives. Civic engagement is a significant part of the entrepreneurship initiative,
connecting the local business community with the academic community.
IMPACT ON PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The Laurier Entrepreneurship Core courses will address the breadth and depth of
entrepreneurial knowledge. Students will build an understanding of key concepts, processes
and methodologies related to the entrepreneurship field. Knowledge will be applied and
tested through analysis, reports, presentations and critiques. In repeatedly testing their
ideas with peers and experts, students will learn to communicate information, analysis and
arguments accurately, reliably and persuasively. At the same time that Core students work
to refine their new venture ideas, they build on foundation courses, ultimately designing and
executing business models in third year.
IMPACT ON RESOURCES:
LE200, LE300 and LE301 are all new courses; launching these will require additional faculty
and facility resources. LE200 will take the place of BU440 – New Venture Creation (2
sections); moving this course to second year is expected to cause enrollment to increase.
BU311- Entrepreneurship and New Ventures (1 section) will be discontinued, off-setting the
increased resource requirements somewhat. LaunchPad will no longer be an academic
course, becoming instead a post-graduate experience, available at The Hub, to which
successful students will apply. For the Option, an additional new course is required, LE201
– Business Fundamentals for Entrepreneurs.
