Boy locked in as Mumbai Police seals flat

MUMBAI: An act of apparent carelessness by the civic authorities and police officials resulted in a 12-year-old boy getting locked inside his own house in central Mumbai's Worli.

Rishabh Pamdani, a resident of Jeevan Niwas in Worli, was locked inside his flat after Brihan Mumbai Corporation (BMC) and police officials sealed it late Wednesday afternoon.

The high court had ordered sealing of the flat after the housing society alleged non-payment of dues. The police and BMC officials had to use force to get the resisting family members out of the building.

However, when police and BMC officials were forcing the residents out of the flat, Rishabh got locked inside the house amid the confusion.

The teenager had to spend over six hours locked inside without food or water. It was only after the news of his being sealed inside the house was broadcast by a TV channel that the seal of the house was broken and an extremely distraught Rishabh rescued late Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Rishabh alleged that he was hit on the head from behind in the afternoon. "I lost consciousness and when I woke up nobody was around," he said.

"The boy then called his farther Bhupendra on his mobile and the news was picked up by the TV channel and repeatedly broadcast. The police took action and rushed to the flat and let the boy out," said Mohanbhai Joshi, a resident of Jeevan Niwas.

The police, however, smell a rat in the whole episode.

"Bhupendra was present at the time of the sealing, so how could the child have been left inside the flat without his knowing. The flat was sealed six months ago and then too, Bhupendra had claimed that Rishabh was locked in. Bhupendra owns the society Rs 5 million and which is why he is playing games," said senior police inspector RD Dole.
