Bollywood bets on 2nd half

Even though Yashraj Films’ Tara Rum Pum and multi-starrer Salaam-e-ishq did not create fireworks in the first half of 2007, optimism has not died down as the industry is eagerly awaiting to create magic with movies in the latter half of the year.
Says trade analyst Taran Adarsh, “Even though many films have not done well during the first half, the rest of the year has tremendous potential as there is a good line-up of films”. He adds, “Financially, Bollywood will be in a good position as there are many promising films yet to come, which will make profits.”

Tara Rum Pum raked in Rs 15.82 crore in two weeks, but has been unable to rake in the moolah from the single screens. The surprise packages of the year are Bheja Fry and Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. While Bheja Fry fetched Rs 5.14 crore in 4 weeks, Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd collected Rs 7.9 crore.

Namesake also raked in Rs 4.5 crore. Namastey London fared decent with Rs 15.11 crore while Vivah is still going strong at Rs 24.2 crore in 26 weeks. The year’s beginning was good with Mani Ratnam’s Guru garnering Rs 30 crore.

The duds of the year include Big Brother, Provoked, Life Mein Kabhi Kabhi , Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Just Married, Water and Yatra.

After the dry spell in the first half, the monsoon for Bollywood is expected to arrive now with upcoming movies. While next week will see multi star cast in Shootout at Lokhandwala and another Bachchan starrer Cheeni Kum, the summer vacations have Yashraj’s treat with Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Yashraj’s Chak De India, Aaja Nachle and Pradeep Sarkar’s Laga Chunari Mein Daag will also release this year.
