Hey guys... I am really a rookie and my posts might sound stupid to you but m really confused..
If i do BMM (specialization- journalism) what are my job prospects? as in what will be my approx salary and where would i be working?

Also after BMM (journalism) if one does an MBA in HR.. would it be good? cuz both the courses, i think, teach mainly communication skills (enlighten me if i am wrong)....

Is a BMS+MBA hr preferred over BMM(journalism) + mba in hr?

Regards,
Rahul

Re: another question

BMM job prospect would be to do freelance writing for magazine/ newspaper / newsportal. Salary would be on per article / per feature basis generally. If hired full time it will be less pleasing to start with in LOW x,xxx - xx,xxx range and it increases with quality and scoops.

You need to get a better understanding of what HR offers. Its not about communication skills. Check out our HR Management sections to get a glimpse.

Its difficult to answer who is preferred as it completely depends on what is he preferred for (skill sets required in a job).

College definitely matters more so for the peers you meet and the social networks you create. Faculty too plays an important role. More details on all of this on BMM Blog at MP

Thanks a lot for replying... i just checked out the HR part of this website and it was quite helpful... cleared all the misconceptions in my mind...

you said the preference of a BMS + mba(hr) or a BMM + mba(hr) depends on the job skills required... can you please elaborate on that... i mean how are the jobs, payscales of the two combinations of degrees different from each other.. to put it in a better way, Which job will a company offer to a BMS + mba(hr) and a BMM + mba(hr) respectively?
and
does a news media employ a bmm+mba(hr) in their hr section or they prefer something else?

* where ever i typed "BMM" above, it implied BMM (specialisation - journalism)

I like it when someone asks questions :) .. the more elaborate the question, the better I can answer.

To address your question, it doesn't make much of a difference when a person has a masters degree. Also, in HR , your payscales depend on the profile you get which can be recruitments, IR, training and development, generalist hr, compensation analyst.

The Background comes into play when you have media companies coming in. So a media house * may * prefer someone with a media background but that doesnt affect pay scales much.

Frankly speaking, I don't quite get why you want to do journalism and get into HR. Both are very diverse fields.

If your interest lies in journalism, you are better off doing a masters in communication at MICA

BMS construes 70 % of things taught in first year of MBA so its like a test drive before you get on the f1 track.

Hi... i just thought you'd ask that question...
Basically m interested in both, hr and journalism... and i think of clubbing them this way..

now a days any bachelors degree isnt enuf for a decent pay... almost everyone ends up doing MBA... and i have a thing for HR and so i wanna do MBA in hr....
so why not BMS? bcuz "what if" i dont get admission in a good B-school for mba? with BMM i have something to fall back on...
and why not bcom? cuz m a science student...
and why not engineering? cuz any ways i'll end up with a mba and my engineering knowledge would prove to be almost useless...

that sounds quite stupid but basically m just thinking over my options after syjc(12th).... not decided anything till now...

thanks for replying though....

What you are doing right now is applying the power of elimination, which means because I dont want this and that and that, I'm left with option C and thats what I will do.

If your ultimate goal is employment, then this doesn't sound good to an HR.

Your career choice should be by the power of selection and not by the power of elimination.. so you say you are good at communication skills, that you have sharp thoughts that you can pen down and instigate a change .. and you want to get into journalism as a career option.. then BMM followed with Masters in Mass communication is the way to go. Its logical and its where your interest lies.

If your interest is HR, then bcom or BMS followed with Masters / Diploma course in HR or MBA in HR.

The importance of a masters degree is diminishing and its not mandatory to have a masters degree to have a progressive career. It definitely gives you an edge over others but its not the only way to climb up the corporate ladder.

Any bachelors degree along with a decent profile and hard work should take you where a masters is in a span of 2-3 years.

And to iterate that your engineering knowledge DOESN'T go waste because even if you are an MBA, the company you choose takes your background in consideration. So a company that requires engineering experience may look for an MBA from engineering background.

At this age its difficult to choose where you want to be, but take your time to figure out what you are most passionate about and what you would do enjoy doing the rest of your life and make it into a career option... for me its internet, management and the dot com bubble.. for you it can be something else.

yeah you are right.... what i really need is time... and probably someone who can tell me about such things....

the reason why i am not so keen on carrying on with masters in communication because journalism, i think, is not very well paying career.... Those who are paid well are really paid well but everyone cannot be Barkha Dutt.... I dont mind compromising a lil on my salary but then it shouldnt be that i have to live with hunger all my life... of course thats an exaggeration, but you get my point. dont u?

Don't be focused on pay scale at this age. If you excel at what you do, someone will be willing to pay top dollar for your excellence.. Focus on what you enjoy and be the best at it :) ... rest will follow. Sometimes you can take away good learnings from a movie like " Three Idiots"

And if you need guidance, you already know where to ask !
