Biggest Threat: Suicide bomber
10,000 Cops Out On Terror Hunt

New Delhi: Delhi Police raised the city’s security alert several notches higher than ever before with intelligence inputs pointing to a threat of a fidayeen or car bomb attack in the run-up to Independence Day, sending 10,000 personnel on a terror hunt.
Outlining the security threat that the city faced from the most dreaded face of terror — the suicide bomber — Special Commissioner of Police Ajay Chadha said: ‘‘We have got a few specific and a number of general intelligence inputs. But the threat is highest of a possible attack from a fidayeen or car bomb.’’
The involvement of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed in the aborted plot to target flights out London’s Heathrow airport has brought the focus
on the desperate lengths to which anti-India terror outfits can go, besides highlighting their global reach.
This has forced the police to declare a Code Red and take specific warnings of Indian agencies of terror strikes over the next week with even greater concern. These perceptions have been further buttressed by US advisories of India being targetted by Al Qaida.
Delhi has been high on the jehadi hitlist. Last year’s 29/10 bomb blasts followed intercepts of messages delivered to LeT commanders in India to stage ‘‘something big’’ in the Capital.
The state of alert has also been reflected in detailed precautions the police has sought to take by running a check on red-beaconed cars in the city. “Official-looking” white Ambassadors have been used by terrorists earlier, most sensationally during the attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001.
In response to the US advisory on a possible Al Qaida strike, Chadha said that though Delhi Police has not received any official communication from the US embassy, security has already been beefed up at all places indicated by the American communication.
Besides being a staging ground for terror strikes, the city has emerged as a centre of hawala funding and exchange of arms for groups like LeT and Jaishe-Mohammed.
