Tuesday, April 18, 2006 (New Delhi):
In her financial declaration to the Election Commission, Congress President Sonia Gandhi claims that she has no car, little cash and her total assets amount to just Rs 1 crore.
She's not the only politician who apparently leads a relatively austere life.
Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi and even Samajwadi Party's Amar Singh claim they don't have that much wealth.
Affidavits filed
If their affidavits are to be believed, then Rahul Gandhi has Rs 5,000 more in cash to spend than his mother Sonia Gandhi, who on Monday declared that she had just Rs 20,000 in cash to her name.
According to the financial declaration submitted by the Congress chief:
In fact when it comes to living the simple life, then Vajpayee is not to be left behind. According to the former prime minister's affidavit, he has just Rs 20,000 in cash.
In 2003, when the Election Commission decided that candidates must declare their financial assets, the aim was to bring greater transparency.
But it seems that most politicians have found a way to work around these rules.
Another example is Ajit Jogi who contested from Mahasamund in 2004. Ironically, the man accused of having paid huge amounts of money in bribes has very little personal wealth.
The former chief minister has Rs 25,000 in cash while his son Amit has just Rs 5,000. In the bank, however, Ajit has Rs 3.5 lakh while Amit claims to have Rs 4.7 lakh.
Both of them have no savings bonds and while Ajit has one Qualis to his name, Amit claims to have no car.
"Mr Jogi does not need a car. He has many supporters and they all want him to travel in their cars," said Shailesh Nitin Trivedi, Ajit Jogi's political secretary.
Real worth?
Amit Jogi, who has been in jail for the last six months on charges of murder, had renowned lawyer Ram Jethmalani especially flown in on a chartered plane along with a battery of other lawyers from Supreme Court for his hearing.
At the time it was alleged that this one-day of hearing had cost the Jogis Rs 50 lakh.
Meanwhile, Sawajwadi Party's Amar Singh, who is seen more often in filmy parties and social gatherings and boasts of some influential connections, has just Rs 10,000 in cash.
He claims to have Rs 4 lakh in fixed deposits and nothing else to his name, not even cars and jewellery.
