BEST to run 'midi' buses from August

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) is likely to roll out 125 new 'midi' buses in smaller routes which will be sent to various depots across the city soon.

These buses, which are not as big as a regular single decker bus and not as small as the mini bus, are expected to be introduced from August, a spokesperson told PTI.

"The buses which are smaller than the regular single decker buses, are presently operational in a few depots in the central suburbs and travel on routes which are hard for other buses to travel through," he said.

He added that the 35-seater buses would help link transport commuters from small routes to major routes.

BEST, general manager Uttam Khobragade said the buses would also help the transport service raise its revenues.

"All the new buses run on CNG, making them economical to operate, and also will help us reach commuters inaccessible to us earlier thereby generating revenue," Khobragade said.

The buses could also be run on routes where it was not economical to operate single decker buses thereby allowing them to cut costs, he said.
