Shorefast Foundation was founded on the premise that cultural and economic sustainability can be achieved
through entrepreneurial philanthropy. Using a social entrepreneurship model, profitable business ventures
can be created where the net earnings support development of new opportunities; a self-fueling system of
sustainability.

Shorefast Foundation activated this model in May 2013 with the opening of its first business venture –
the Fogo Island Inn.
THE OPPORTUNITY IN FRONT OF US NOW
The successful opening of the Fogo Island Inn launched a geotourism industry on the island and reawakened
an appreciation for Newfoundland culture, creating 75 new jobs and dozens of ancillary ventures. And this
was done in a way that has garnered top travel, hospitality and tourism awards from around the globe.
The entrepreneurial spirit of the community has been ignited. This presents a tremendous opportunity to
launch our next venture – a community owned business to produce and sell “Handmade on Fogo Island”
furniture.
Guests at the Inn have been eager to purchase the products
and furnishings that help make the Inn so unique. From the
hand-made furniture to the quilts and cushions, everything
possible has been made by local craftspeople and artisans
in collaboration with contemporary designers. Visitors
admire the fine detail, the quality materials used, and the
one of a kind authenticity.
Rural Newfoundland has a rich and long tradition of making
things by hand. Carpenters, seamstresses, artisans, and
artists can anticipate strong demand for products if provided with advice on contemporary design,
marketing, and seed funding for materials that appeal to today’s discerning buyers.
We are reaching out to donors to become social entrepreneurs and help the community take full advantage

• Restore the Fishermen’s Lodge as a shared workshop and training centre;
• Create a professional e-commerce website for marketing, sales, and payment purposes;
• Provide start-up funds for raw materials, tools and workplace equipment;
• Fund marketing materials, expertise, and advertising costs.
Social entrepreneurs participating in this venture will have the satisfaction of
