Bajaj Auto to finalize Indonesian venture soon

Bajaj Auto Ltd has planned to set up a manufacturing plant in Indonesia, which will serve as a hub to cater to the Asian and Southeast Asian markets.

The Bajaj team has gone to Indonesia to study the project and finalise the equity partner for setting up the plant.

This will be the company's first two-wheeler and three-wheeler manufacturing overseas project where it will have equity participation from a foreign company.

Bajaj will be the majority stakeholder in the new plant.

Bajaj Auto plans to establish the plant to save on high import duties in Indonesia and effectively take on competition from the Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese two-wheeler makers.

The company now exports its two and three-wheelers to that country as completely-built units.

Currently, Bajaj Auto's distributor in Brazil has an assembly line to produce three-wheelers from knocked-down kits imported from India.

Overall, Bajaj Auto hopes to post a 34 per cent growth in exports this fiscal by selling 1,26,000 units, including 78,000 two-wheelers.
