Introduction



Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur , widely known as XLRI was born out of the vision of a Jesuit Priest, father Quinn Enright. It was founded in 1949 in the Steel city of Jamshedpur, Bihar. Since then the Jamshedpur Jesuit Society has nurtured the growth of XLRI in keeping with its commitment to "Magis" (excellence in everything).

Over the last few decades, XLRI Jamshedpur has contributed its best to the professional growth and management of innumerable institutions that's serve the public especially organized industry, labour, service agencies engaged in rural development, education, health and other public systems. Besides the focus on developing managerial competence among the pupils through acquisition of specialized knowledge and skills, the Institute emphasizes the importance of developing a sense of social justice with right attitudes and values of discipline, dedication and commitment among all its members.

Courses Offered


Post Graduate Programme in Personnel Management & Industrial Relations (PM & IR)



The Institute offers a two-year full time Programme in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations. Arguably the best programme of its kind in Asia, the Personnel Management and Industrial Relations equips students with the knowledge and skills required for managing Human Resources at all levels. The major thrust areas are Human Resource Planning, Human Resource Information Systems, Selection, Performance Management, Training and Development, Compensation Administration and fostering harmonious employer - employee relationships in the framework of state regulations. This programme has produced some of the top HR professionals in the industry today.

Besides the courses directly related to PM & IR, the programme also includes a series of courses in various functional areas of management. Being a specialized programme it does not provide for further specialization. Students choose an appropriate mix of elective courses according to their preferences. Graduates of this programme are qualified for executive positions in Human Resources Development, Personnel Management, industrial Relations, Labour Welfare and other related areas. Since its inception about 2460 students have Qualified for the Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations and are occupying senior level positions in private and public sector organizations and in multinational companies in India and abroad.


Post Graduate Programme in Business Management (BM)

The Business Management Programme is designed to prepare students for a wide variety of managerial positions.
In their first year students take core courses in the functional areas of management. In the second year they take up elective courses in chosen areas of specialization. Since its inception, 2060 students qualified for the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and are placed at senior levels in national as well as multinational companies in india and abroad.

Eligibility for PMIR & BM Programmes


For the regular full time Programs, graduates who have completed three years of Bachelor's degree in any discipline are eligible to apply. Postgraduate applicants in any discipline are welcomed. Special consideration for SC/ST candidates.

Candidates applying for the three year Executive Postgraduate program must hold a minimum of three years Bachelor's Degree from a recognized University in India/Abroad in any discipline , be employed in a full-time job, must have at least two years of relevant managerial experience in an organization of repute in the public, private or non-governmental sector after completing graduation and the necessary permission from the employer for pursuing this program.

Three Year Executive Post Graduate Programme [EXEC-PGP]

XLRI has been offering this three year programme since June 2000 for the working executives in India who have the potential to reach higher levels in the hierarchy of the management. The Exec-PG programme provides executives with an opportunity to earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management without interrupting their career. The curriculum is similar to that of the BM programme and it exposes them to a wide range of management theories and practices.

The participants in India spend 18-20 days in the Campus thrice a year to complete the course requirements. They are expected to do additional work as carry-home projects and assignments. The mix of participants, which includes entrepreneurs and executives from various functional areas, provides an enabling environment for learning. The Institute awards the Postgraduate Diploma in Management to the participants who successfully complete all the requirements of this programme.

Admission Process


Each year in August, XLRI invites applications for admission to its programmes through advertisements in major newspapers and magazines in the country as well as through announcements displayed in major universities and colleges.
The Admissions Process involves the following:
1. XLRI Admissions Test : To get admission to XLRI candidates have to appear for XAT 2005.
2. Application to XLRI : The application form to apply for XLRI is available only online at www.xlri.edu. Once the candidate logs on to this site, a full set of instructions will appear guiding the candidates to register for admission to XLRI.

One -Year General Management Programme (For Working Executives)


In order to satisfy the thirst for knowledge and to become a learning organization, XLRI has evolved a one year consolidated programme in general management with the objectives of providing the practicing managers a substantial exposure to theoretical foundations in management as well as to provide them a holistic perspective of business in such a way that they are not only equipped with tools and techniques to perform their task effectively but also to shoulder greater responsibilities in the future as they move up the hierarchy.

The Institute awards the Executive Postgraduate Diploma In General Management to the participants who successfully complete all the requirements of this programme.

Candidates applying for One Year General Management programme must hold a minimum of three years Bachelor's Degree from a recognized University in India/abroad in any discipline, be employed in a full-time job, must have at least three years of relevant managerial experience as on March 31, 2006 in an organisation of repute in the public, private or nongovernmental sector after completing graduation.

Fellow Programme in Management (FPM)



The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is equivalent to a Ph.D. programme. The FPM is a full-time, residential, doctoral programme that trains prospective scholars to become highly skilled and innovative researchers and teachers in various aspects of management. It primarily aims at preparing students for careers as faculty members at premier academic institutions.

Eligibility


Applicants for the FPM should have a Master's degree or its equivalent in any discipline, or CA, ICWA, or CS with at least 55% marks (45% for SC/ST candidates) or a BE/B.Tech degree or its equivalent with at least 60% marks (50% for SC/ST candidates). Those completing their final examination by 15 June 2006 may also apply. The calendar for the admission of the FPM candidates is same as that for the students of the PGPs. The admission requires two sequential online processes. Interested candidates are required to (1) apply online to take the XLRI Admissions Test (XAT), and (2) apply online to XLRI for the FPM.

Instead of taking the XAT, FPM candidates can also submit GMAT/GRE/GATE/UGC JRF (research) results. Those who have done their PGP from XLRI, any IIM, MDI Gurgaon, FMS Delhi, or XIM Bhubaneswar, with a CQPI of at least 6.00 or equivalent will also be exempted from appearing in the XAT. Those who will not be taking the XAT should visit http://www.xlri.ac.in/research and follow the instructions for applying to XLRI for the FPM.


Short listed candidates will be required to appear for a personal interview during the later half of March or early April at XLRI, Jamshedpur for the final selection. The candidates called for the personal interview will be reimbursed to-and-fro sleeper class train fare by the shortest route.

Fellowship

Fellow students are awarded a fellowship of Rs.10,000/- per month, and no fees (admission, tuition, course material, computer, or library) will be charged. Fellowship will be paid only to full-time residential students for a maximum period of four years, which may be extended by six months on the recommendation of the thesis adviser. From second year, a student can work as Research and Teaching Assistant (RTA), for which Rs.5,000/- per month will be paid extra.

A fellow student is entitled to a contingency grant of Rs.10,000/- per annum during the first two years and a grant of Rs.20,000/- per annum during the third and fourth years.

Support Facilities


Classrooms & Other Facilities
There are eight state-of-the-art class-rooms with in built multimedia presentation support. The seating arrangement is amphitheatre style and each lecture hall seats 70 students. These class-rooms also support closed-circuit recording and play-back of lecture sessions.The four Syndicate Rooms are multi-purpose areas for other academic exercises.

Library
The Library of XLRI came into existence in 1949 when the Institute was established in the Steel City of Jamshedpur, Bihar. It was named after late Sir, Jehangir Ghandy in February 1972. The aim of the Library is to serve the needs of our faculty, Research Scholars, Students and Members of the Library.

Computers

Computers are available to facilitate research activities, course work an administration. The computing resources at XLRI include latest servers and workstations, a state-of-the-art campus network and 2 MBPS Internet Connection. There are high-end servers to host XLRI Web page, mail Server, news server, Oracle and other software and database (PROWESS OF CIME, VANS, etc).

XLRI has GIGABIT FIBER Backbone throughout institute's local area network, where every student is equipped with a computer in his/her room and has access to the internet and e-mail. Through the fiber optic backbone Internet, e-mail and electronic notice-cum-discussion board facilities made available to the faculty, students and administration and the participants of the management development programmes. The Student computer center operates round the clock seven days in a week.

About 170 units of latest Pentium workstations as Windows NT/Windows 95/98 client serve the desk needs of faculty, students, library, and system classroom, and various administrative offices. These are connected with the students hostel through a common fiber optic backbone network, high-speed Ethernet switches and UTP connections for the desktop provided to share the internal server and connectivity to Internet. PROWESS published by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CIME) is available on LAN for faculty and students to get corporate information of over 5000 companies in India.

Other Facilities


Sports are taken seriously at XL. The fields/courts on campus include basketball, volleyball, badminton and football. Enright Hall in GH1 provides additional facilities for indoor sports and includes a fully equipped gym.

In addition to the facilities on campus, students at XL have access to swimming pools, tennis courts, squash courts and a synthetic athletics track through our affiliations with local sports authorities.
