Aussie cricketer Shane Warne retires

MELBOURNE, Australian Shane Warne, test cricket's leading wicket-taker, announced his retirement from international games.

Warne, 37, confirmed his career with Australian club sides and the national team will end after the fifth test match against England in Sydney next month.

He told a news conference in Melbourne, however, that he would honor the remaining two years of his contract to play for the English county side, Hampshire, during the Australian winter.

Warne, who has taken 699 test wickets with his leg spinners, is odds on to pass the 700 mark during the fourth test against England, starting Tuesday in Melbourne.

Australia has clinched the best-of-five match series and regained the Ashes trophy it lost to England 15 months ago.

Warne told reporters his "time had come" and he would consider his future away from cricket "over a few quiet beers and a few smokes."
