University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne is Australia’s leading university, acknowledged with the award of the 2001-2002 Good University Guide University of the Year.
It undertakes research and training of international significance and quality across a wide range of disciplines. The $262 million that the University spent on research in 1998 made it one of the largest research organisations in Australia. In 1999, it attracted Australian Research Council (ARC) new large grant funding of $12.92 million.

Established in 1854,The University of Melbourne guided the development of the professions, scientific learning and cultural life in the young colony of Victoria. Early on, it established a reputation for academic excellence. Its graduates and former students have achieved distinction in many fields, including the offices of Governor General, State Governor and Prime Minister. Many graduates have gained fame in the arts and sciences, the professions and politics, including the awards of the Nobel Prize and admission to the Order of Merit.
Today the University attracts Victoria’s best students as well as talented men and women from interstate and over 40 foreign countries. Its twelve faculties offer bachelor and graduate degrees in a number of disciplines. Melbourne’s growth strategy is geared to postgraduate education and advanced research. In recent years it has established links with many Asian and North American institutions and plays a leading role in the Asia-Pacific region.

The University is attractively located in Parkville, an inner Melbourne suburb 1.5 kilometres from the city centre. The campus forms part of the prestigious “Parkville Triangle” where many of Melbourne’s hospitals and research institutions are found. With spacious parklands to the west and north, the campus on the east merges into cosmopolitan Carlton, home to open air cafes, bookshops, avant-garde theatres, Melbourne’s best Italian restaurants and a year-round student population.
