The global footprint of Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerrys continues to grow, but is being overshadowed by the meteoric rise of its rivals in the smartphone industry.
Despite an increase in the total number of BlackBerry devices RIM sold in the second quarter of 2011, the Waterloo, Ont. company’s overall share of the global smartphone market dropped to 11.6%, down from 17.4% in the same quarter last year, according to new data from market tracking firm IDC Corp.
Although RIM sold 1.2 million more BlackBerrys than in the same quarter in 2010 — jumping to 12.4 million sales from 11.2 million last year — RIM sold fewer BlackBerrys than it did in the first quarter of 2011, when it shipped 13.9 million devices, commanding 14% of the market, according to IDC.
Complicating matters for RIM, the BlackBerry maker’s slide comes at a time when the global market for smartphones grew by 65.4%, with more than 106.5 million multifunction mobile devices sold in the quarter around the world, according to IDC.
Apple shipped 20.3 million iPhones in Q2 according to IDC, a 141.7% increase over the 8.4 million devices the company shipped in the same quarter last year.
