An interview with Dr.P.T.Vijayshree - Principal of KRMMC

· Tell us something about yourself and your institute?

Dr.P.T.Vijayshree holds her Ph D in economics and MBA. She is presently the Principal of KRMMC affiliated to the University of Madras, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She is also the head of the department of Business Administration of the college; with her rich experience in collegiate education for more than a decade. She is also the director of Dr. Meena Muthiah Study Centre for Entrepreneurship, (A research & Activity unit of KRMMC) which is her own brain child. She has pioneered many academic ventures like certificate courses, study centre and vocational training centre in the college. She has published many papers at international, national ad state level seminars. She has also organised many such events in the college. She has authored books on various topics. A person with diversified interest, she dynamically approaches any subject to get full essence of it. She has produced 10 MBA and 3 M Phil scholars and also is a guide for 7 Ph.D scholars. She is presently specializing in entrepreneurship mangagement. She has been the resource person for various conferences. She has delivered many invited lectures in various institutions.

About the institution:

Kumararani Meena Muthiah college of arts and science affiliated to the University of Madras under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Mrs. Meena Muthiah Secretary and Correspondent granddaughter of a great visionary late Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar imparts that kind of education which moulds the young minds to acquire the required skills to suit the changing scenario in job market along with value driven principles for life. A living legend and pioneer in music, arts, education and health, meena aunty is the guiding force and inspiration for all our endeavours.

The college was started in the year 1996 and it offers today 10 UG and 2 PG courses in shift I and 2 UG courses in shift II with strength of 1110. The college has state of the art infrastructure with well equipped library, labs and effective coaching by a team of dedicated staff members. We are proud to boast that the students excel in academics and every year college produces University ranks in varied disciplines.

· When did you join teaching profession? Why did you choose to be a professor?

It’s my passion to teach and guide young minds.

· What about teaching at b-schools inspires you the most?

I was a visiting professor to b schools and I was inspired with the rich experience through more of practical knowledge and exposure to the students given by them. It’s interesting.

· Which subjects do you teach? Which ones do you like the most?

At present handling HRM, ED and Marketing Research

Each paper has a unique intertwining part in it. I love to read new areas relating to management.

· What is your teaching philosophy?

Delivery to be simple, with live examples, case studies and learner oriented.

· Do you believe teaching should be more application based than theory? If yes, then how do you support it?

Theory is the basic foundation for any application. The relativity between the two should be understood. Application of theory is a must for any discipline.

· Who in your life has influenced you the most?

· What suggestions would you like to make in the course of MBA?

I request one who does it or teaching it to maintain the decorum of the course even better.

As a faculty, what kind of projects do you expect students to work upon?

Real time projects are becoming difficult for students as there are many restrictions. So projects can be modified to apply and check theory into practice.

· How are current technological advancements changing your teaching style?

I prefer to have traditional teaching technique as it gives the pleasure of one to one interaction. However I use ICT learning to students so that they are aware about the latest advancements even better in their field of interest.

· What is the impact of mobile technologies boom influencing your area of specialization? How are social networks influencing your discipline?

Any advancement in technology is for easing the understanding at one point. However if it is used in an efficient manner for the purpose it has been introduced it will have a great impact in our field.

· How does the economy story of India change your discipline?

Day to day changes gives a heavy impact to understand what exactly is happening around. India is emerging as a power besides one should understand that changes are inevitable and that to develop oneself changes have to be accepted.

· What changes do you see on the horizon in your area of discipline?

It is only this area that we can proudly tell that change is the only word which can’t be changed.

· One touching incident that happened with you in your teaching career?

Every day is interesting and new with young generation with full energy with us. It’s great to channelize that energy.

· There is a shortage of eminent professors at b-schools. With more and more institutes offering the MBA course, do you think MBA will become just another degree?

Yes, at times it will make us think like that. There should be some restrictions to start mba programmes by anyone who just starts it.

· Do you think the course curriculum is at par with industry expectations?

It should be made clear to anyone is that education is a basic knowledge tool used to understand the need for what we want to be. It’s our interest and passion that we need to enhance ourselves in the field we want to be in future and equip ourselves to the industrial expectations. Curriculum is a base… enhancing it through extensive reading and learning experience and add on values makes anyone to suit to industry expectations.

· If you hadn’t been a professor, what would you be? What are your professional/career goals?

I wanted to be what I am. No other options.

· What message would you like to give to students across the globe?
