An interview with Dr. Arvind Dhond - Faculty at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai
Tell us something about yourself and your institute?
I am Dr. Arvind Dhond with a total of more than 22 years of experience covering both Corporate & Teaching. I am also a Professional Author, Trainer, Counselor, Psychologist, Researcher, President & Treasurer of all India Teachers Associations & an Editor of a Research Journal. I teach in St. Xavier's College, Mumbai which is more than 140 years old very reputed institution.
· When did you join teaching profession? Why did you choose to be a professor?
15 years back. Having a corporate experience for around a decade and a strong passion for teaching, i felt that i can share my real life practical experience with the new generations & help them to gain better insights in the subjects that they learn.
· What about teaching at b-schools inspires you the most?
At B-Schools students are more mature in order to understand the subject in-depth & they can easily be made to understand the advanced concepts.
· Which subjects do you teach? Which ones do you like the most?
I teach Accounting & Corporate Financial Management. I like the same subjects that i teach.
· What is your teaching philosophy?
Understand the fundamentals, the real life application part of the subject, clear the concepts & all your doubts.
· Do you believe teaching should be more application based than theory? If yes, then how do you support it?
I strongly believe that in all my subjects teaching has to be applied or else it has no relevance to the learners. Mere book knowledge is of no use in the subjects that I teach.
· Who in your life has influenced you the most?
My Parents who are my role models have influenced me the most.
· What suggestions would you like to make in the course of MBA?
Instead of crowding the syllabus with lots of contents, MBA course has be made more applied & practical.
· As a faculty, what kind of projects do you expect students to work upon?
Industry oriented & application/research based projects are expected from the students to work upon sincerely, honestly & ethically.
· How are current technological advancements changing your teaching style?
More use of ICT in day-to-day teaching. Also keeping in touch with e-mails/mobile in order to clarify the doubts faced by students.
· What is the impact of mobile technologies boom influencing your area of specialization?
Mobile technologies influence a lot on the subjects I deal with. It helps in related data collection & any-time, any-where communication.
· How are social networks influencing your discipline?
Social networks influence my discipline in order to clarify the doubts faced by my present students, students from other institutes whom i don't even teach, my ex-students also who are studying in other parts of the world.
· How does the economy story of India change your discipline?
It brings in better understanding of our country's economy vis-a-vis the rest of the world in terms of understanding the emerging concepts in my discipline.
· What changes do you see on the horizon in your area of discipline?
More integration of the curriculum with the rest of the world.
· One touching incident that happened with you in your teaching career?
One of my student around 10 years back who was had then undergone a recent surgery a few days back & was bleeding from his stomach from the wound where the stitches were still there, but still he sat in my class for 3 hours continuously & went to the doctor only after my class got over. This was really the most touching & unforgettable moment in my life.
· There is a shortage of eminent professors at b-schools. With more and more institutes offering the MBA course, do you think MBA will become just another degree?
Yes, but in the long run the quality will speak for itself.
· Do you think the course curriculum is at par with industry expectations?
No. Most of the course needs to be updated in order to suit the industry expectations.
· If you hadn’t been a professor, what would you be? What are your professional/career goals?
A very good Finance Manager, which i was earlier & I resigned from that post in order to enter teaching career. My professional/career goals are to occupy high positions in academics.
· What message would you like to give to students across the globe?
Investment in Education will give Lifelong Returns.
