MBA students arrive at the Merage School with varied academic and career experience. Their diverse work
experiences are leveraged in our experiential learning model that builds foundational knowledge with core
business courses and gives students structured opportunities to apply learning in class projects.
Core Groups
Students with diverse interests and backgrounds work in core groups to navigate ?rst-year core classes
together, allowing you to show off your strengths and gain support for your weaknesses. Collaboration is
key. Whether your teammates are coming from a different work environment — or a different country — the
result is a well-rounded, real-world experience of teamwork that broadens your abilities.
Strengthening Presentation Skills
Starting with the Presentation Skills Program, students and student teams receive highly personalized
feedback to improve their individual presentation styles, tactics and abilities. Each team and student receives
video and written feedback speci?cally designed to improve performances under pressure. This process
helps you build skills so you can differentiate yourself by effectively presenting your ideas in your summer
internship and beyond.
Real-World Projects
Requiring idea generation, research, analysis, and focused recommendations presented to faculty, classmates,
and ultimately, clients, real-world projects are offered throughout the two years. These experiential projects
provide you with an opportunity to put into practice concepts, skills, and tools acquired in other parts of the
MBA program. Some of the most popular learning opportunities include:
MBA Consulting Program: Work directly with a company to create speci?c deliverables and action plans.
A ?nal presentation is a highlight for your project. Participating companies include: Cisco, Experian,
Hyundai Motor America, Microsemi Corporation, Mission Linen, Northrop Grumman, Sage, Walmart
and more.
Business Plan Competition: Ranked among the top in the nation, this rigorous six-month business
plan competition pairs coaches and teams to compete for the opportunity to win substantial cash
prizes and recognition — not to mention potential seed ?nancing of up to $1 million. Open to all UC
Irvine students, staff and researchers, the competition provides exciting prospects for innovation.
Participants form a team, submit concept papers, attend competition-related workshops and submit
their ?nal business plan. Past winners have successfully launched and sustained new businesses.
