Common Entrance Test (CET) is a gateway to secure admission in Engg colleges in TamilNadu.Every year thousands of students would take-up the Exam.Last Year TamilNadu Govt has abolished CET(Common Entrance Test) on the ground that rural students don't have access to coaching classes for Entrance Exams on par with their Urban counterparts. I completely agree on that point. But instead of finding the solution the Govt has relegated the problem.
Govt has passed orders to abolish the Entrance Test and all the future admissions to Engg colleges would be based on the marks secured by the candidate in the Higher secondary Exam only.
There are lot of contradictory points to explored on this.First and foremost is "Are Rural students getting higher secondary education on par with Urbanites?"60% of the students taking the higher secondary exam are from city.We should improve the quality of rural schools and make sure that 80-90% attendance in those schools.Special incentives can be given to coaching institutes to operate from rural areas.
Second,Abolishing CET would inturn increase the competition on the higher secondary exam. The structure of the Exams recommends the students to have route learning and this would never increase the knowledge of the students which is not a welcome trend.People who are trying to give IIT-JEE/AIEEE would be having a second thought.Previously the preparation would help in scoring
marks in the CET.
The third point would be the institutes that have trained the students in Entrance Exams previously would start coaching students for the 12std exams. In that case also city students have an upper hand over the rural students.
The Govt should concentrate on increasing the quality of the rural schools.Special incentives can be given to the teachers/coaching institutes encouraging them to open more institutes to train rural students.
The Govt should modify the structure of CET.Entrance Exam is be based on the 12 std syllabus.Instead it should be made more application oriented and should have a GK section and should be able to test the IQ of the students. This structure would also help the rural students to take the Exam and would also help in increasing the standard of the students.
So the Govt has washed a burning problem instead of finding a solution.
