Abhijith a Alumni of IIFT speaks about his life at IIFT

Q1. Tell us something about yourself?

Ans: I am a Mechanical Engineer from the 2007 Batch from Govt. Engg College, Trivandrum and part of the 2011 batch of MBA(International Business) from IIFT, Delhi. I love meeting new people, travelling to all corners of the world, capturing those locations through my lens and trying out a variety of cuisines.I work with Tata Motors Limited in their International Business Division and am in Mumbai since January 2012.

Q2.What is so special about IIFT?

Ans: The institute focusses on trade and international business, making the students ready to take on IB profiles from day1 without any additional inputs, IIFT also has a good NGO participation programme which made people like me who used to think of NGO's as a shame and money making cover to actually be happy with the NGO I worked with and now when am working Idonated some money from my salary to help that NGO in my capacity, then IIFT has a balanced student mix with girls-guys, engineering-non-engineering which allows us to understand perceptions of people from varied educational background and help later in work life.

Q3. How did IIFT help you?

Ans:It helped me become a process oriented person from a technical oriented person, it helped me get better exposure to the corporate world through the seminars n panel discussions and also alumni interactions. It gave me a lot of confidence when talking about business developments and most importantly it helped me get into TML wch was a dream company for me to work with since my engineering days.

Q4. Share some of the fun things you did in institute?

Ans:Lohri celebration by burning old institute furniture, each birthday being celebrated with a baptism with water, end of induction programme with a water bath from seniors, being part of the organising comm of intra iift sports meet called as UWL, which has high prize money and investments etc.

Q5.How is the hostel life at IIFT?

Ans:IIFT has mixed hostels and it was a bit intimidating to find girls in the same floor complaining about the noise and the other activities we did in our room, but then it helped us understand classmates better outside the classrooms and the hostels were great venues for class discussions as well as impromtu parties. Now as the student strength is increasing many people live outside the campus also. This hostel used to have parties that were equally nosuy and it is in a better location with a metro station at walking distance

Q6. Is the Name of the Institute from where a student does his/her MBA important while entering into corporate world?

Ans:The name of the institute does not matter but you get a preference if you have good alumni in the corporate world and that helps a lot.The name of the institute helps when you join companies which go to limited colleges. The most important thing once you are in the company it’s your work that speaks for you than the B-School that gave you the degree.

Q7.Describe life IIFT life in short

Ans:Life @ IIFT Delhi starts off at 5:30 in the morning, when your roommate wakes you up for the impending Yoga session at 6:00 AM. You think of sleeping but suddenly realization dawns…damn…yoga is compulsory, and yes…u need to maintain the 75% attendance critireon. The classes keep you occupied till 6:30 (sometimes, even 8:30) in the evening, with intervals that can range from 15 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your fortune for the day.6:30 - 9:30 can involve any of these:

- A power Nap

- Bakar

- Club interactions (Fin, Marketing, Trade, Consulting & Entrepreneurship)

- Shopping (SIM Cards are of utmost priority in this sector )

- A brief visit to the hospital if u're one of those Delhi-Viral-Victims (quite a few of them were down in the first week) - An introspective swell of pride - the General euphoria about how great a place IIFT is (or) Resenting on the biggest mistake you've made till date - opting for an MBA - and discussing it with your batchmates (believe you me, this is undoubtedly the best way to get to know your batchmates)

- Coursework (only if you've go t nothing better to do )

A brief dinner later, 10:00 sharp, the PDPs start and the interaction game begins. Talent shows, freak intros, skits, advertising campaigns...they've got it all. You are free any minute from 2.30 - 3:00 AM, and then you retire for the day...only to find yourself that within two hours later again your roommate would wake you up. .
