He has a movie named after him. He has fans all around the world who emulate him and his acts. He is perhaps the most popular footballer in the world. His main attributes are his abilities ranging from free kicks, dodging opponents, accurate crossing from the right to seemingly limitless reserves of energy. Well, the man in conversation is the England midfielder - David Beckham.
The 32-year-old has put England back on track. At a time when team England was in dire straits, Beckham has come as a pleasant recall to the squad, spelling his class on the field and not just off it.
Beckham's impact in his recent games has probably been enough to see him picked again. His free kicks set up John Terry to score in England's 1-1 draw against Brazil in the first international friendly at the Wembley Stadium. That was not it. There was more to follow. Beckham showed excellent footwork in Tallinn, where the Real Madrid midfielder steered England to a 3-0 win, scoring two goals, over Estonia that put their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign firmly back on track.
Undoubtedly, his heroics were praised by manager Steve McClaren. And for Beckham, it was truely a dream return. When McClaren took over as England coach from Sven-Goran Eriksson in August, his first decision was to drop Beckham. And after that Beckham's England career was considered to be over after he was left out of McClaren's first squad in August 2006.
But with his heroic form in the recent times, the star midfielder was a sure shot contender to be picked up by the man who dropped him. Unfortunately for the other players, but fortunately for Beckham, his likely replacements at that point of time were either injured or had not come up to the scratch.
Considering his sparkling form for Real Madrid since the turn of the year, coupled with his tactful displays in the last games, Beckham has made McClaren confirm his slot in the squad.
It goes without saying, McClaren is a happy man - for he made the right decision at the right time. In fact, McClaren hailed Beckham's contribution as 'immense'. He also said that Beckham is a very good player and he deserves to be in the team. What more could Beckham ask for.
Well, the road ahead for Beckham could be a long haul if he is to continue playing for England. When Beckham leaves for Real Madrid for LA Galaxy in the next summer, he would be embarking on a series of long-distance flights.
As for the man himself, he wants to continue playing football for years to come, for as long as he is allowed to. The former captain has proved his mettle to the world again. Beckham has come as a saviour for England at a time when the side was going through a major crunch. Will he continue with his present form and improve on it to find a permanent place in the England squad is a question that most of his fans might want to ask.
