Ori inally$ two codecs$ named a%ter the ty#es o% data channel they were allocated$ were used$ called MFull RateM 3&A+b#s6 and M?al% RateM 3'+b#s6! These used a system based u#on linear #redicti*e codin 3=/"6! In addition to bein e%%icient with
bitrates$ these codecs also made it easier to identi%y more im#ortant #arts o% the audio$ allowin the air inter%ace layer to #rioriti7e and
better #rotect these #arts o% the si nal! ;SM was %urther enhanced in &BBC with the ;SMDEFR codec$ a &8!8+b#s codec that uses a %ull rate channel!
