8 Things To Expect at Blue Devil Weekend

Spring is one of the most exciting times of the year at Fuqua! As prospective students start receiving admission decisions and thinking through their next steps, we’re preparing to welcome them to campus for Blue Devil Weekend (BDW).

From Attending BDW to Planning It

I remember attending BDW so well. It was the blue icing on top of a delicious cake that sealed the deal for me. I met incredible people who are still some of my closest friends today (special shoutout to my OGs, Chaz, Sam, Jon, and Steve — proof that BDW friendships really do last). I ate amazing food (you are truly in for a treat!) and even had time to explore apartments in downtown Durham and on Ninth Street. My partner joined me on the trip, and it was a great experience thanks to intentional programming designed to be inclusive and fun for partners.

When you join Fuqua, you’ll join one of six sections. Section 5 does it best; I would know!

To admitted students: If your mind is racing, you are not alone. You might be double-checking deadlines, wondering if you already clicked “accept” in the portal, thinking about housing and roommates, or trying to picture what life in Durham actually looks like. Take a breath. We have you covered!

As a co-chair of BDW, I can confidently say that our goal is simple: We want you to experience Fuqua as it really is. Part of that means setting expectations and showing up prepared to absorb it all.

The Blue Devil Weekend Agenda

BDW is booked and busy in the best possible way. In my experience, there’s no need to write everything down. Focus on taking it all in, making connections, and enjoying the experience. To help with that, here are eight things you should expect:

  1. A packed schedule with a lot to see and do. We intentionally build in breaks and downtime.
  2. The weather in February and April in Durham can be unpredictable, so dress comfortably and remember that layers are your best friend.
  3. You will get a chance to try snacks and goodies from local Durham businesses as we give you a taste of the community. (If you have time and are curious to explore more of Durham, ask any of the BDW volunteers for their recs.)
  4. If you join us for both the February and April BDWs, no worries — the agendas are mixed, so you will get even more exposure to Fuqua.
  5. We know housing is top of mind for admitted students, and BDW is a great place to start. You can hear from many of the apartment communities at our housing fair. Don’t worry about having it all figured out — there will be plenty of apartment options available. Many students secure housing well after BDW. There is no need to rush the process, and we encourage you to ask current students where they live and what their experience has been like.
  6. At BDW, you will have the chance to attend the student club fair and meet many of the groups that make Fuqua special. As a proud member of Beer Club, I can promise there is something here for everyone, whether your interests are professional, social, athletic, or purely fun.
  7. One of the best parts of Fuqua is the student community. Current students are genuinely excited to welcome you, share their experiences, and help you envision life at Fuqua. Ask every question you can think of. There is truly nothing we have not heard before, from recruiting to academics to life in Durham. We’re here to help!
  8. Finally, you will meet future classmates who may become close friends, teammates, and part of your support system for the next two years. Enjoy it!

A Few Final Tips

BDW will be your best chance to determine whether Fuqua feels like home for the next two years. I suggest taking some time to reflect on whether you can see yourself here. A few ideas: walk around campus, visit Duke Chapel, or spend some time at Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

We cannot wait to welcome you to campus and show you what Team Fuqua is all about. See you at Blue Devil Weekend, and don’t forget to check out Durham while you’re in town!
