209th 1M/1M Roundtable For Entrepreneurs: Spotlight on Penn Students

During this week’s roundtable, we collaborated with the University of Pennsylvania to support their student entrepreneurship drive. All four presenters today are semi finalists of the PennVention competition.

AWARE

First up, John Bergantino from Philadelphia, PA, pitched AWARE, a very interesting product focused on helping football players prevent head injuries and concussions. There has been a lot of discussion in the media on this topic, including those triggered by Malcolm Gladwell’s writings. It’s an area well worth investigating.

SPARC

Then, Cristina Sorice from Philadelphia, PA, pitched SPARC, a robotics boat concept for oceanographic exploration. This project needs to connect with Eric and Wendy Schmidt’s Schmidt Ocean Institute to get itself off the ground.

X-Miles

Next, Hernan Gerson from Philadelphia, PA, pitched X-Miles, a solution for frustrated frequent flyer mile owners who are unable to redeem their miles, enabling them to sell the miles on an exchange to travelers who are more flexible and willing to travel red-eyes, etc. A much-needed solution, although, its viability still needs to be validated. I am sitting on a few hundred thousand British Airways miles that I have not succeeded in redeeming. Frustrating as hell!

Mana

Last up, Jason Littman from Philadelphia, PA, pitched Mana, a microwave-style cooking device with capabilities for detecting nutrition value of various food items. Jason wants to position it for health conscious youth who don’t know how to cook. Interesting idea, except, a lot of these intelligent home appliances have failed to gain adoption. Jason needs to understand why, and what would be different in his case.
