Patna: Gonu and Monu are the latest victims of Bihar police’s whims and fancies.
They are two toddlers accused of trying to rape a 20-year-old woman along with their 12-year-old friend Ravi.
A case has been lodged against them at the Maner police station.
"In logo par aarop laga hai ki inko jabardasti dhaan ke khet main le ja rahe the, beizaat karne ki niyat se (They have been accused of forcibly taking the girls to a paddy field with an intention to rape them),” says uncle of the accused, Mahendra Singh Yadav.
"Yeh case jisko main represent kar raha hun, mujhe ascharya hua ki yeh bachche jo itne minor hai ki is tarah ka koi offense bhi nahi kaar sakte hai, inko kaise accused banaya gaya hai (I was surprised by this case that I am representing. These babies who are minors and cannot commit any offence, how could they be accused)?” says advocate, Mohan Jha.
This is not the first such case in Bihar, a three-month-old baby had been accused of looting a bus in Muzzafarpur district a few months back. The police say that foul play is involved in most such cases.
“It is becoming a trend. There have been three to four such cases in the last couple of months. People have not been charge sheeted by the police. Nothing has been said in course of the investigation that these minors were guilty or the offence. They produce youngsters to dodge the court and derail the process of investigation,” says Inspector General, (Headquarter), Bihar, Anil Sinha.
It has been seen that families fighting over land, drag even minors into their dispute in many such cases. Police are also blamed for intentionally naming minors to let real criminals off the hook.
